OverviewFor readers of The Glass Castle, Half Alive, and Wild, an inspiring, intimate memoir about family, loss, and finding one's way, that shimmers with truth and heart on every page. On a sunny spring morning, Jane Ann McLachlan was driving her daughter, newly home from university, on a routine errand. Their affectionate banter was suddenly broken when a jeep barreled into their car. The impact trapped McLachlan in the car with multiple injuries, and resulted in severe post-traumatic stress syndrome. McLachlan takes us on a deeply personal and emotional journey through PTSD. She is forced to surrender her illusion of control and re-evaluate what it is that gives a life value. In telling her story, she captures with searing candor and moments of wry humor the impact of PTSD on its victims and their families, and shines a light on the unacknowledged truth that PTSD is not something that only happens to war veterans or victims of years of abuse, but something that can happen to anyone. Impact is the story of how a life can be shattered in the blink of an eye, and of how to begin again. Table of ContentsReviewsJane Ann courageously shares her innermost thoughts as she describes her complicated trauma experiences, the impact it had on her family, and her painful healing journey. As a social worker and educator, I found her writing captured the emotional magnitude of PTSD and helped me to relate to her experiences in a very real way. This memoir is a must read for anyone who wants a deeper understanding of trauma and healing. Angela Hovey, PhD, RSW What Amazon readers are saying about IMPACT: I loved this book, and learned a lot from it. Over these past 15 years, I have read just about everything I could get my hands on about PTSD, including a lot of memoirs. Of all the memoirs that I have read, this book -- IMPACT -- is by far my favorite. I learned a lot from this very well written, articulate, riveting memoir. If you want to know exactly what it feels like to have PTSD, buy this book and read it! J. A. McLachlan's book, Impact, is one of the most well-written books I've ever read. She's the real deal as she is brutally honest about her descent into a very dark place, as well as her ascent back to her new normal. I highly recommend her book to everyone whether you have PTSD or not. An up-close and personal account by a strong and determined woman of dealing with trauma. Every paramedic, ER/trauma unit nurse and therapist should read this. If you've ever experienced PTSD, you will recognize yourself in this book. I found it to be very healing to have someone describe experiences and feelings that often make it seem as though you are completely alone. I would encourage anyone who has been through a traumatic experience or who loves someone who has PTSD to read this. The triumph of the human spirit over overwhelming circumstances encourages me like nothing else. This story will stay with me and I will recommend it to others. This is the first book I have read where I thought, wow! this is how I felt, exactly! What I felt, Jane Ann put into words. As I kept reading, becoming more and more enthralled, I felt as if I was reading about myself. Bravo for writing about this, it certainly has helped me acknowledge my past depression and more. A powerful story about surviving! A must read for anyone who's life has been suddenly interrupted by an event beyond their control, as well as emergency medical and nursing staff who care for people like Jane Ann. Jane Ann is such a great storyteller that you can hardly bear to read of her experience. The excruciating fear and horror she felt during her lowest times seems beyond endurance, yet the fine silver thread of hope for recovery that towed her back in is the same lifeline that anyone who has suffered PTSD can grasp for themselves.
