Overview

"Two words that should never go together are ""children"" and ""death."" Unfortunately, there will come a time in many children's lives when someone they care about dies. It could be a person or a family pet, and it still hurts. Far too often, our littlest ones get lost in the bustle of the preparations we undertake when saying a final goodbye to someone we love. But that doesn't mean that children don't see and hear everything that is going on around them! This book is prepared for the youngest among us, those we try to shield from sadness of any kind. It is an interactive book created to help adults begin the conversation with children aged 3-8 about death and what happens afterwards. This book discusses a place some call Heaven. Through simple concepts, words and creative Indigenous artwork, you can hopefully draw out questions the child has, but doesn't know how to ask! This book will also serve as a cherished ""memory book"" for the child in the future."

Author Information

Rev. Rosemary Godin-Keith is an Ordained Minister with the United Church of Canada and owner of the website: thankgoodness.ca. She is also a former journalist with newspapers in Ontario, Quebec and the East Coast, and continues to freelance for print and online publications. Rosemary briefly served her province as an MLA in the NS provincial legislature. She currently lives and works out of Sydney, Cape Breton, in Nova Scotia. But most importantly, she is a mom to Marc and Philip. ABOUT THE ILLUSTRATORS Sisters, Kassidy and Kaylyn Bernard, are Co-Owners of Patuo'kn; an interdisciplinary creative small business based out of We'koqma'q First Nation, Unama'ki, Mi'kma'ki (Cape Breton, NS). Patuo'kn (pronounced bahdoo-whoa-ghin) is a Mi'kmaw word for driftwood. Their grandfather ran a roadside business selling handmade driftwood crafts, while sharing stories and Mi'kmaw culture with visitors travelling through their community. To honour their family and creative history, they chose to continue his legacy by carrying on this name to honour the way their ancestors shared experiences and created relationships through art. And most importantly, Kaylyn is a Mama to Rory (Lo'li) and Kassidy is Rory's Sukwis (Auntie).
