OverviewIn 1992, Hurricanes Andrew and Iniki devastated portions of Florida, Louisiana, and Hawaii causing over $35 billion in damages and the loss of 38 lives. Hurricane Andrew, which accounted for $32 billion of the damages, has been called the most costly natural disaster in the history of the U.S.. During the same year, Typhoon Omar caused over $0.5 billion in damages on the U.S. territory of Guam. The dollar damages resulting from the Hurricanes of 1992 were six times those caused by Hurricane Hugo in 1989.
