Inspired by the ancient vision of pilgrimage as a way to connect heart and mind with the enlightened lineages and evoke the healing power of enlightenment in our world, Holy Places of the Buddha begins by describing the eight traditional places of pilgrimage from the Buddha's time to the present day. From there it traces the spread of the Dharma along pilgrimage routes of old across India and the Northwest into Afghanistan. Richly illustrated, the book draws upon the Buddhist teachings, traditional histories, travelers' journals not easily accessible to Westerners, and archaeological reports. Highlights include Nalanda and the other great Buddhist universities, Sanchi, the cave temples of western India, and Buddhist sites in Kashmir and Taxila in the northwest. Maps, site plans, illustrations, and photographs portray what was, what remains, and the magnitude of what was lost.
