Overview

History of Urban Planning and Design is a comprehensive introduction to the historical evolution from antiquity to the present of the city and the built environment. It considers the forces that influence the city s form and content and explores the wide variety of city designs and built forms that have evolved throughout history. This reader incorporates both Western and non-Western planning traditions and highlights attributes of successful and unsuccessful urban planning, design, and architecture. It introduces the reader to fundamental urban design and architectural principles and their evolution over time, and is an ideal text for students of architecture, urban design, urban planning, and urban history. History of Urban Planning and Design demonstrates that cities are more than their physical attributes. Through the presentation of scholarship from many of the seminal voices in the field, the collection presents the relationship between the physical design of the city and larger social, environmental, cultural, economic, technological, and political systems. This text includes an appendix containing a list of relevant, internet-based research resources. Mirle Rabinowitz Bussell is a faculty member in the Urban Studies and Planning Program at the University of California, San Diego. She earned a bachelor s degree in architecture from U.C. Berkeley and a master s degree in regional planning from Cornell University. She received her doctorate in urban planning from UCLA. Her research interests include urban history, the relationship between philanthropy and community development, affordable housing development and neighborhood revitalization, quality of life planning in disenfranchised urban neighborhoods, and the relationship between gender and planning. She focuses on applied research that bridges theory and practice.
