Overview

Finland was part of Sweden until 1809, it then became a Grand Duchy of the Russian Empire until it declared its independence on December 6, 1917. From these humble beginnings, Finland has emerged as an important player in the European Union and the world. Historical Dictionary of Finland, Third Edition contains a chronology, an introduction, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has more than 300 cross-referenced entries on important personalities as well as aspects of the country’s politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. This book is an excellent resource for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Finland.

Reviews

"The ""Historical Dictionaries of Europe"" series is a standby for reference collections. The volumes follow a more or less standard format of several hundred entries with a chronology or two and a selected bibliography at the end. Internal cross-references are included. Maude was sole author of the first two editions (1995, 2007); this third edition, coauthored by Hjelm and Maude, expands on the previous two. It has some 100 pages more than the first edition and is especially strong in politics, international affairs, and biography.... The English-language bibliography is more than 50 pages and broken down into categories (history, literature, and social sciences). Researchers will find the inclusion of scholarly periodical references and websites time-saving. This excellent resource will be a welcome reference for those starting research on Finland, often rated the happiest country in the world. Recommended. All readers.-- ""Choice Reviews"""
