Before moving to academia in 1985 he was Head of Research at Reyrolle Technology. This was followed by a period as Professor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Director of Engineering Research at the University of Sunderland. He has published more than 180 papers and contributed to several text books. He is a Fellow of the IEE and the IOP and is a CIGRE Distinguished Member.
