She has been interested in science and nature for as long as she can remember. Leslie earned graduate degrees in Oceanography and Social Work, and worked as a medical social worker and school social worker. She wrote for parenting magazines and the internet when her two daughters were small, and has been writing stories for children since 1998. She is the author of Fatuma's New Cloth, winner of the 2003 Children's Africana Book Award for best picture book, as well as HEY THERE, STINK BUG!; TALL SHIPS FUN!; MISSING PIECES; and ONE PIECE AT A TIME.
