Author Information

Rob Thomas has been walking in mountains ever since he can remember, has been rock climbing since he was in high school and been a sharp-end mountain rescue volunteer since 1994. He is currently a senior team member of the Gauteng Mountain Rescue Team and has contributed significantly too much of the team's training material. He is also a member of Mountain Club of SA's sub-committee for Search and Rescue, where he fills the portfolio managing helicopter rescue. When asked to describe his profession he will tell you he's a 'dope-on-a-rope' who earns his income in fairly even parts from mountain guiding and instruction, teaching rescue skills and working in the film industry as a stunt rigger. He runs The School for Mountain Leadership and lectures part-time at the University of Johannesburg's Faculty of Emergency Medicine where he teaches rope, wilderness and aviation rescue.
