OverviewFounded by the James Joseph (J.J.) Haverty, The Havertys Furniture Company opened its first store in 1885 on 14 East Hunter Street in downtown Atlanta, Georgia. In 1889, J.J. formed a partnership with Mr. Amos G. (A.G.) Rhodes, an experienced merchant, who had opened his first Rhodes store in downtown Atlanta in 1875. The first Rhodes & Haverty store opened in Atlanta on 89-91 Whitehall St. and together A.G. and J.J. opened additional stores across the South and Midwest. In 1908, they amicably dissolved the partnership, dividing the stores between themselves and their sons. The Havertys Furniture Company continued to expand in cities across the South and Midwest uniquely contributing to the grand traditional architecture common to our urban heritage. These photographs illustrate the buildings, trucks, window displays, advertisements and memorabilia of Havertys' Urban Years. We hope you enjoy the journey into Havertys' past.
