Overview

Excerpt from Harmoad or the Mountain of the Assembly: A Series of Archaeological Studies; Chiefly From the Stand-Point of the Cuneiform Inscriptions Europe so far as possible, and my indebtedness to them has been continually very great. But in the present state of cuneiform sci ence every student has to rely chiefly upon himself and it has been from the astronomical and mythological texts themselves that I have derived the most valuable hints relative to the prehistoric ages. In writing the present treatise the attempt has been made to adapt it as well to the ordinary reader as to those who have made antiquities a special study. For the one class the extracts from authors in foreign languages have been put into English, while for the other class the references simply to the works cited would have been sufficient, and even preferable. For similar reasons an Eng lish transliteration of foreign terms has been given, without regard to any uniform system, however, as the original text has been also given in nearly all cases. For the convenience of those who may wish to consult the authorities cited, a list of them has been pre pared in which the titles of their works are given in full.
