Overview

The strategic rivalry between China and the United States is well established. Since Xi Jinping came to power in 2012, it has manifested itself in a much more visible way. During Donald Trump's presidency (2017-2021), this rivalry clearly deepened. And since Joe Biden took office in January 2021, it has by no means been reduced. Beijing's project is becoming a little more obvious every day: to become the world's leading power and therefore to dethrone Washington from this pedestal; dominate East Asia and thus oust the United States from the Western Pacific. Perceived above all as strategic, this confrontation has long seemed to focus on the outskirts of the People's Republic, facing Taiwan and Japan, the South China Sea or the Korean peninsula. Today it is spreading around the world. Furthermore, it is evident that this competition is not only strategic. It has spread to the economic and technological fields as shown by the start of the trade war between Beijing and Washington in the spring of 2018. And if it has always been ideological, this dimension has also been asserted since Xi took over. To Hu Jintao, head of the Communist Party and the Chinese state. Now, China is placing itself more and more openly in an anti-democratic and anti-Western posture all over the world, especially in developing countries. In addition, at the United Nations and elsewhere, it intends to reform international standards so that they better serve its own interests. In other words, China has become the main revisionist power on the planet. The Sino-American confrontation is therefore almost total.
