He received his Ph.D. in linguistics from the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada, and his M.A. in English language and literature, French language and literature, and modern history from Albert-Ludwigs-Universitaet, Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany. In addition to writing articles for linguistics journals, Schirmeier is also co-author of Cornelia Goethe - Briefe und Correspondance Secrete 1767-1769, the first translation of the private French correspondence of the sister of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Germany's most famous poet.
