Overview

The geopolitical landscape of Central Europe has undergone considerable transformation in the last two decades. While the pre-Global Financial Crisis period saw a focus on strengthening ties with Western Europe and the USA, the post-crisis period has seen reorientation towards Asia, in particular China. This book charts these changes in geopolitical dominance in the region, covering the economic influence of China, the increasingly assertive diplomatic involvement of Russia and increased US interest in the region under the Biden administration. The book also seeks to explain why the countries of Central Europe are realigning their geopolitical alliances towards the great powers as confidence in the European project and its economic benefits has waned, and what opportunities this realignment could hold.

Reviews

Through detailed case studies, commanding knowledge, and engaging analysis, Moldicz offers a sobering, yet rarely perceptive account of the complex, dynamic, and fast-moving target of Central European geopolitics. In a time of growing uncertainty and geopolitical rivalries, his timely book offers valuable, gripping, and illuminating insights of one of the key geostrategic locales in world affairs. -- Emilian Kavalski, Jagiellonian University, Poland This is a seminal text for all students of East-Central European dynamics of politics, geopolitics and identity. Leading us both carefully and persuasively between numerous pitfalls of “liberal” and “conservative” partisanships and sheer ideological stereotypes, the author draws an actual and dynamic picture of geopolitics in this intricate and important region of Europe. -- Mikhail V. Karpov, Moscow State University, Russia This is a must-read book for scholars and students with a long-standing interest in the Central European region. -- Song Lilei, Tongji University, China
