I've found the book to be a good reference to have on the shelf, and have purchased copies for people when they join my lab group in order to introduce them to or refamiliarize themselves with the technologies underlying the generation of sequence data. I can very easily see this book being used to supplement lectures in an introductory course on genomics and biotechnology. Review in Heredity This is a superb textbook for modern molecular biology. The set-up of the book is very reader-friendly. Everything is cross-referenced, which is enormously helpful. Another nice aspect of the book is the small, digestible sections separate from the main body of text. Overall Brown's book is an excellent textbook that provides a thorough account of what is known about Genomes today. Great book! This is a great book, covering the basics of genomes and genetics. I'd definitely recommend it to any 1st or 2nd year molecular biology student. Genomes vs Genes Genomes is a very good text and suits my Molecular Biology course perfectly. Whereas Lewin's Genes is didactically poor and full of mistakes, Genomes is clear, concise and extremely well-organised. An excellent overview of the latest developments in mol.gen. Book review: T. A. BROWN's -GENOMES- Genomes is a textbook on molecular genetics, written for undergraduate students of molecular biology. Recently, it was used as a textbook in a -Human Molecular Genetics- course for undergraduate and graduate students of Biological Psychology and Behavior Genetics. These students have no basic training in molecular biology, which may be reflected in the comments below. The overall impression of the book is that it is well illustrated, comprehensible and user-friendly, making it a fine tool for teaching and learning. A lot of attention in this book is focused on the latest developments in this rapidly developing research field. For students of biological psychology and behavior genetics it is necessary to understand these developments to be able to understand and interpret journal papers in the field of molecular genetics that may have important implications for behavior genetics and or cognitive neuroscience. ... Boxes, technical notes and research briefings supplement the main text of the chapters. The boxes offer additional information about the main text, the technical notes describe experimental procedures and the research briefings illustrate strategies that have been used to study genomes by describing research projects that have been important in the past for a better understanding of genomes. This proved to be a nice way of providing extra information without interfering with the main text. Finally every chapter ends with a -further reading- section, suggesting some books and articles that are not referred to in the text, but may be useful for additional material on specific issues. The book closes off with a nice short appendix. By citing journals and Internet sites relevant to genome research, it enables one to keep up to date with the latest developments in this rapidly moving research field. In conclusion, the book proved to be a good textbook for our course, with its clear illustrations and comprehensible way of describing many techniques and processes. ... On the whole, this is a well written book, which gives an excellent overview of the latest developments in molecular genetics.
