Overview

The new adventure of photographer Mauricio De Fex take us this time to the enigmatic island of Fuerteventura. An island of 1,660 square kilometres protected by UNESCO, and with a population just over 100.000 residents. More family-oriented and easygoing than its neighbours on the spanish archipelago, and with an arid, almost lunar landscape, it is a place where history seems to repeat itself. The invasions by the first Europeans in the 12th century have been echoed in modern times by the invasions of tourists that began with the advent of mass tourism in the late 1960's. As a result of this constant stream of visitors and burgeoning tourist developments, you might expect the island to be a whirl of colour and activity, but strangely enough it has an air of undisturbed virginity and perpetual calm. From every point you stand on the island, the riches of this desert land will strike you, tantalising your senses with a splash of the always warm turquoise water, a hint of an orange sunset, and, to add some texture, grains of sand from the dunes blown onto to your skin by that ill-tempered wind. The abrasive wind, to which some say the island owes its name, and which plays a key role in the local ecosystem, may be one of the main associations people do with the Island. It is clear that this place made a powerful impression on photographer Mauricio De Fex. Moving to a different object of attention but keeping in mind that a landscape is just a feature on planet's face, this representational landscape photography uses a filter of impressionism, having as a result images that explore a less tangible side, rising the standard value that society randomly gives to what we normally see and use in our daily routine. Despite the apparent calm, this series shows a place very much alive, volatile and ready to fight against its intruders.
