Overview

On January 2006 I embarked for Japan to receive a new tanker, which had been commissioned by Soponata but was delivered to General Maritime, since they had absorbed Soponata. It was one of my professional dreams of to take part in the recepti- on of a new ship: to oversee the end of its construction, to do all the trials at sea, and to take it out on its maiden voyage. Added to this there was my lifelong dream of visiting Japan, a cul- ture that has always fascinated me. On the 21st of January 2006 I embarked for Nagoya. I was shaking with fever, hiding what was almost a pneumonia, but I was not about to give up on these dreams. The rest of the story I'll try to tell you through the photos on the following pages. Today my only regret is not having taken three times more pictures.

Author Information

Born in Mozambique, where he spent all his youth, Jimmy moved to Portugal after the 25th of April to join the Naval Academy. He then moved to the Nautical School, where he took the Marine Machinery degree, embarking soon after. After nine years at sea, he settled on land, where he worked in several companies specializing in mainte- nance, and where he began to put some thoughts and feelings on paper. A few years later, he returned to the sea, where he currently spends most of his life. Jimmy continued to write and has already pu- blished some poetry and short story books. He also tried his hand at editing a small photography book, since photography is one of his hobbies - a way at looking at life. The sea has always been his passion and this is reflected in his stories, poems and photos.
