Overview

"St. Paul speaks of the apostles and prophets as being the ""foundation of the household of God,"" and of Jesus as the ""chief cornerstone"" of that household. He also speaks of a ""mystery which has been hidden . . . but now has been revealed to his saints."" According to Jesus himself, the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms all foreshadowed him. After Jesus' ascension, St. Peter declared that ""all the prophets . . . have also foretold these days."" Where has this great mystery been hidden, and revealed? Is the Old Testament actually about Jesus? And how does the New Testament show us that the Scripture has been fulfilled in him? Through poems that insightfully connect biblical characters and events to each other, Foundations of the Cross and Other Bible Stories further opens the reader's mind to the unity of the Bible, all of which proclaims Jesus Christ."

Reviews

"""What I most like about Cynthia Erlandson's poetry are her profound connections between the various biblical narratives and themes, often in places where one might not expect them. This is delightful stuff, and the more familiar one is with the whole biblical story, the more one can appreciate these links."" --Daniel Lewis, retired assistant professor of Christian studies, William Tyndale College ""Poet Cynthia Erlandson breathes new life into many of the stories and traditions that are at the heart of Western civilization. She writes in a way that readers, regardless of their backgrounds, can enjoy. Meter and rhyme shoot off Erlandson's pages and into the hearts of readers in ways they simply cannot without well executed poetry. Cynthia Erlandson's Foundations of the Cross is both a cultural delight and a literary achievement."" --Evan Mantyk, editor and president, the Society of Classical Poets ""Foundations of the Cross is a collection of beautifully crafted poems that sheds a fresh light on the Scriptures. . . . In the poem where Moses asks ""But Who Am I?"" we are given a glimpse of the all-too-human traits of those God chooses. Poems like ""The Donkey's Palm Sunday"" let us know God's love reaches out to all his creations in a thoroughly engaging way. . . . Through striking and graceful poetry, this book makes the nature of our merciful and miraculous Maker accessible to all--a significant achievement in an era that has led us to believe that God is dead."" --Susan Jarvis Bryant, Society of Classical Poets international poetry competition winner"
