OverviewDuring the nineteenth century throughout Europe, modern languages increasingly won a place alongside classical languages in secondary school curricula. There was also a considerable expansion in the adult market for utilitarian learning. New demands in both areas gave rise to a variety of practical innovations and theoretical suggestions which pre-dated the more co-ordinated Reform Movement of the centurys last two decades. Several innovators, despite a relative lack of influence in their own age, are particularly deserving of contemporary reassessment: The work of Claude Marcel (1793-1876) is especially impressive, with its penetrating analysis of issues relating to the definition and ordering of the four branches of hearing, speaking, reading and writing. The Mastery System of Thomas Prendergast (1806-86) while more narrowly conceived, is also remarkable, in this case for generative principles underlying the method. Other significant 19th-century innovators not associated with the Reform Movement (which will be covered in a separate set of volumes) include Fran?ois Gouin (1831-96) and Lambert Sauveur (1826-1907), early pioneers of Direct and Natural methods of language teaching.
