Overview

Floating in Darkness: A Journey of Evolution Humanity faces an unprecedented crisis that threatens all life on Earth. Desert Storm fighter pilot and NASA astronaut Ron Garan addresses this head-on in Floating in Darkness: A Journey of Evolution, the follow up to his critically acclaimed first book The Orbital Perspective: Lessons in Seeing the Big Picture from a Journey of 71 Million Miles. Ron takes us on an extraordinary journey through outer space and inner space. He explores the dancing, intersecting orbits of religion, spirituality, and science while grappling with his own role in the violence of combat and the effects of war on all aspects of human life. We witness Ron struggling with mortality while also basking in the sheer wonder and beauty of our world and beyond. From this perspective, Ron maps out a viable path forward - to solve our crisis we need a giant leap in humanity's evolutionary process. We must transcend individual and collective ego and embrace the true nature of our interdependence with this fragile planet and all life within its biosphere. Ron shows us how to discover our purpose, detoxify our divisive culture, and become a white blood cell in a growing immune response to heal our world.

Little more than 500 human beings have the grit, the persistence and the talent ever to have flown in space. A far smaller number have the poetry to tell the tale of that journey. You can either go to space or you can write with true artfulness about it, but you can't do both. That, at least, is the common rule, but Ron Garan is the rare exception to it. In Floating in Darkness he gives us the astronaut's perspective in the lyricist's voice-challenging all of us to think about our Earth, our species, our strengths, our failings, our hopes for our world, and our future off of it in a new way. The vast majority of us will never float in the darkness Garan and only a few others have, but we can all experience it by proxy, thanks to Garan's words. Time Magazine Editor at Large (and NYT bestselling author - Apollo-13) Jeff Kluger Read this perfectly inspiring poet's floating journey into space. Astronaut and master storyteller Ron Garan will make you feel alive and thankful you are on Spaceship Earth. Ron unlocks the secrets to understanding our complex yet enchanting and delightful universe. A must-read for anyone who wants to improve their future and our world. Mark Victor Hansen - Co-creator of the Chicken Soup for the Soul, One Minute Millionaire, You Have A Book In You, and Ask! series Floating in Darkness is a riveting must-read for navigating our time of fear and upheaval - vividly describing dog-fights, seafloor living, space flights and space walks. Ron Garan generously shares his deeply personal journey of overcoming seemingly-impossible obstacles and temptations to live out many people's wildest dreams. In doing so, he gained a profound perspective on the unity the world truly needs. It is a story of a life well lived, in his amazing career, his love for his family, his friendships and love for the planet, which is a true inspiration to lift our spirits during these dark times. Emilie Sydney-Smith - CEO, EXOworks Ron Garan, family man, decorated fighter pilot and astronaut, American hero, raises us, through his own awakening journey, to a greater perspective of a world caught in doom, division, war, and political polarization. The realization that we are One and are all interconnected should transform the way we look at reality and interact with each other; this is what Ron Garan defines as the Orbital Perspective. This inspiring new book, written in his unique poetic style, is an exciting and necessary Leap of Awareness to heal the world from a divisive, flat (two-dimensional), and limited point of view. Paul Drouin, MD President of Quantum University Even among astronauts, Ron's view of the world stands out. Ron writes with passion, empathy, and deep affection for humanity. Ron's books are must-reads. Dylan Tayor, Founder of Space for Humanity, Chairman and CEO, Space Voyager Holdings, Former Global President of Colliers International.
