Reviews

The speaker and audio for this book do an incredible job, because they repeat each vocabularly word at the beginning of the audio session, and speak at a slow pace with emphasis on the syllables so you are guaranteed to understand the words. This was a really good thing by the authors! The side-by-side translations are very helpful, with introductory vocabulary lists, but the vocabulary lists are incomplete. There are difficult words in the stories that are not defined. Even with these shortcomings, I would recommend the book to learners of the language. This gives you lots of vocabulary in context, which is more helpful than isolated words. There is, however, no grammar, though through repetition of vocabulary and constructions you can begin to understand some grammatical forms. Czech grammar is too complex to jump straight into novels after learning the basics. This book is ideal as a first book, with short sentences, all with English translations. Additionally each chapter start with a list of words you will encounter in that particular chapter. I hope there will are more books like this one in the works.
