Overview

The Fusgeyers were the thousands of Romanian Jews who, unwilling to tolerate anti-Semitism, left their country on foot between 1899 and 1907, and headed for North America. Destitute but resolute, they supported themselves by giving theatrical performances, or selling stories and poems. In North America, some worked as peddlers, shopkeepers, café and restaurant owners, actors and writers in the famous Yiddish theatre; others helped build the railway west, worked in the gold and silver mines, or created the Jewish agricultural communities. Walking in their footsteps across Romania, and following the immigrant trail across Europe to America, Jill Culiner's Finding Home is a detailed account of Romanian Jewish history, and a touching reminder of the courage of our ancestors. Finding Home won the The Joseph and Faye Tanenbaum Prize in Canadian Jewish History, and was shortlisted for the ForeWord Magazine Prize Book of the Year Award.

Reviews

Jill Culiner has written a significant and often gripping account of her personal odyssey beginning with her unique walking tour through Romania and ending at Lipton, Saskatchewan. She has introduced a new way of looking at history. Abraham Arnold, Jewish Historical Society of Western Canada Culiner is a keen observer of eastern European culture, and her acerbic wit and stunning lyrical style have created a compelling chronicle of loss and discovery. Her encounters with the past and the present of the Jewish presence in Europe are both chilling and illuminating. Rick Kardonne Jewish Tribune Culiner's innate skill as a storyteller, seeker of truth, and photographer of life, has made Finding Home possibly one of the best books written in the last decade. Even if you are not of Romanian or Jewish heritage, read Finding Home, as it may unlock the key to much of your own personal history. Kindah Mardam Bey, Lucid Forge Finding Home is a very interesting read, a fascinating history, and a remarkable experience. I encourage you to take similar adventures; they foster journeys of the spirit and soul. Ellen Fine, Mass-Pocha
