Financial Crime and White-Collar Criminals: An Empirical and Theoretical Survey for Research

Overview

Research on white-collar financial crime has historically focused on case studies of high-profile individuals, and the aftermath of the 2008 Financial Crisis has crowded recent literature. However, the notice paid to these attention-grabbing cases has provided little incentive to expand the view from individuals to larger samples, which has limited the development of broadly applicable theories. To combat this research imbalance, Gottschalk compiles five years' worth of empirical data from more than 350 white-collar convictions in Norway between 2009 and 2014. He then provides a survey of existing theories of financial crime and, from the intersection of data and theory, identifies three main characteristics of nonviolent financial criminals-economic incentive, organizational ability, and behavioral deviance-that he shapes into an overall framework. Gottschalk then demonstrates the application of his data and theory structure by examining international case studies in the context of the new framework. Comprehensive, masterfully organized, and compactly written, this structured survey provides a valuable foundation for the development of new theories to address the ongoing rise of white-collar and financial crime. Students, researchers, and instructors of finance, criminology, psychology, and business will find this supremely navigable compendium a valuable resource.
