OverviewThis first-of-its-kind textbook, now in its 2nd edition, is designed as a resource for teachers and students alike, to facilitate the understanding of how grammatical analysis is presented in the Arabic language. It has a double aim: (1) to enable students to correctly follow the discussions of grammatical concepts found in Arabic texts, and (2) to empower students to express these concepts on their own. Before now, no one has ever formally codified the method for expressing Arabic grammatical concepts. Students have had to work it out for themselves through rote practice. Classroom experience shows that many students have difficulty with this, and as a result, they become frustrated with Arabic grammar, finding the subject much harder than it really is. Equally important, these grammatical expressions are commonly encountered in a wide range of classical Arabic texts, from works of philosophy and poetics, to theology and law. Expressing I'rab uses a step-by-step approach to show the grammatical analysis of different words under a wide range of grammatical circumstances. A wealth of examples is provided to give practical demonstrations of each principle discussed. This book is suitable for classroom use by intermediate and advanced students as an addition to the Arabic grammar curriculum. It is also designed for self-study and to be used as a quick reference guide.
