He began take pictures to illustrate his presentations as a seasonal ranger for the National Park Service in Alask and the West. Mark Schlenz first discovered his interests in mountaineering, writing, and environmental literature while living in the Eastern Sierra in the 1970s. He later taught high school English Literature at the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1994 with a dissertation on Eastern California writer Mary Austin.
