OverviewDear Reader, I took this case on as a matter of pride which, as we all know, usually comes before a fall. The pride? An old colleague (he was certainly never a friend) asked for my help with an inquiry that was getting the better of him. He didn't put it quite like that, of course, since he'd never been a fan of the absolute truth. He reeled me in, knowing that I wouldn't pass up the chance to show him how the job should be done. The fall? Lets just say there were several slip-ups along the way including a fight - feet, fists and a heavy oak door - which I lost. The fight, not the door. To put it another way two blokes nearly killed me in the toilets of a coffee bar near the Old Bailey. It didn't stop me catching the murdering bastard at the heart of Evil Turn but it did make me wonder if my fighting days were over. The answer is no. Oh yes, I had help from my eldest daughter, at home on the run from her boyfriend. She's the dictator in the family, thank God. if she hadn't ruled over us so forcefully in the years following Maggie's death, we might not have made it... Hawk *** This is a modern crime story in the classic English tradition. Nathan Hawk does a favour for an old colleague, a man he's never much cared for. He agrees to house a terrified and bedraggled young murder witness, along with two SOU officers, for a short period before the trial at The Old Bailey. Hawk quickly realises, maybe he knew all along, that he's being used. The old colleague, a man known for getting others to do his dirty work, has gambled that Hawk won't be able to resist poking his nose into the evidence. He's right, of course. Hawk is just the man to fend off an attack by the IRA, find thirteen million poundsworth of heroin and catch a murderer - no matter how much danger it involves.
