European Transport Policy and Sustainable Mobility

Overview

It is now widely accepted that transport is becoming increasingly unsustainable and that strong policy intervention is required to reduce both the growth in transport demand and the environmental costs of transport. This book challenges conventional approaches to transport by moving away from trend based analysis towards the use of scenarios to identify alternative sustainable transport futures. It both summaries the development of EU transport policy and presents a critique. The policy context is widened to include the global changes taking place in economics, society and technology. It develops new methodologies for policy making for the next 25 years. This book is directed at researchers, transport professionals, policymakers and students who are interested in creating a sustainable future for transportation in Europe and beyond. This book arose from the European Commission research project, Policy Scenarios for Sustainable Mobilty (POSSUM) which was co-ordinated by David Banister, Professor of Transport Planning at University College London.

Reviews

'It is a new and very interesting attempt to place transport activities within their general and societal framework. It is also a very inspiring read, because it shows that, if we can move ahead together, we are still able to prepare an acceptable future for future generations.' - Journal of Transport Geography 'An excellent series of practical courses for study and revision of modern languages. I was particularly impressed by the interface design, which is clear and easy to use ... The language learning materials in all the CD ROMs are well written and researched, and use a well-chosen selection of examples that are a good collection of examples of real situations. This collection of CD ROMs is an excellent revision tool for someone setting out on a business trip or holiday, or as a resource available in a student language learning laboratory.' - Lorna M. Hughes, Assistant Director for Humanities Computing, York University, USA 'Educationally sound and effective.' - Library Technology

Schleicher-Tappeser It is a new and very interesting attempt to place transport activities within their general and societal framework. The tools involved may still be open to improvement, but even as they are, they offer a real breakthrough. -Jean-Claude Lasserre, Laboratoire d'Economie des Transports, Universite Lumiere, Journal of Transport Geography 9, 2001
