Overview

The poems in this book are an attempt to speak in acommon tongue with mountains, rivers, and forests. Too often poetry is thought of as the domain of human creativity with its source in the depths of the imagination. We use it to speak of the world, but not to the non-??human worldalet alone with it. The poems in Estuaries suggest that speech and poetry are fundamentally rooted in the ecosystemathe detritus of fallen leaves, the curvature of ariver bend, and the sound of rain on aheron's wings. All of this might be regarded as the speech of the Earth. When we speak or write poetry that engages these voices we become participant in the patterns of the watershed.

Author Information

Jason Kirkey is an author, poet, and the founder of Hiraeth Press. He grew up in the Ipswich River- North Atlantic Coast watershed of Massachusetts. Jason brings together his backgrounds in environmental philosophy and conservation biology with poetry and prose focused on rewilding the human heart and mind. He has written four volumes of poetry, including Estuaries, and a nonfiction book, The Salmon in the Spring: The Ecology of Celtic Spirituality. Jason is currently at work on his second nonfiction book and a novel. James Liter is a photographer, poet, and artist. From his first training at the Kansas City Metropolitan Museum of Art, expressing creativity has always been a part of his life. James has published a volume of poetry and has paintings on exhibition in galleries in France. A love of imagery couples with his concern for nature and the human condition. These have convinced him that there is nothing more powerful than images to ignite the passion, wonder and love needed to birth a new vision into the world. Together with his love for painting and poetry, James has now turned his attention to the medium of photography. After living twenty-five years in Europe, James has recently returned to the U.S. and currently resides in the Great Lakes region of western Michigan.
