OverviewDiabetes mellitus, a multi organ disease, is the most prevalent in people throughout the world. It is a group of metabolic disorders with one common manifestation of hyperglycemia. Chronic hyperglycemia causes damage to the eyes, kidneys, nerves, heart and blood vessels. Three major factors contributing to the incidence increase include the ever-growing prevalence of obesity, reduced physical activity, and genetic predisposition. It is especially to be expected in developing countries, as an effect of 'westernization' (more 'fast food' available along with sweetened drinks). Appropriate diet and physical exercise followed by self monitoring and self management remain the main forms of therapy, and some 50% of patients can control their disease only by use of these measures. About 39% of patients in Croatia require oral hypoglycemic agents, and the rest (21%) need insulin to achieve a satisfactory glucoregulation.
