OverviewModern pharmaceutical Formulations are so complex because it contains, in addition to one or more medically active ingredient, a number of excipients such as diluents, disintegrating agents, stabilizers, colors, flavors etc. Development of method to determine intact molecule of a drug substance in presence of excipients. The purpose of derivative study is to measure intact drug molecule in presence of other excipients and degradation impurities. In derivative spectroscopy the first or higher derivatives of absorbance with respect to wavelength are used for both qualitative and quantitative analysis. Derivative spectra can be generated by optical, electronic or mathematical methods from normal UV spectra.
