Author Information

You know you're narrating a character right when your children grab your arm and say, Daddy . . . read the bad guy normal, you're scaring us with the voice. Aside from reading villains in storybooks really well, Derek Shoales has worked on corporate, eLearning, and commercial voice-over projects, been a graphic/web designer and an inventory market mentor, sung bass to baritone in choirs, and played the guitar, electric violin, and Clare whistle. Phill Alexander is an assistant professor of game studies and the codirector of Varsity Esports at Miami University. A lifelong gamer who has competed with others since the days of Pong, Alexander has spent the last twenty years working in education. His first book, Identity and Collaboration in World of Warcraft, emerged from years of researching and playing as part of a progression raid group in WoW. With the exponential growth of esports, Alexander has become a frequent consultant and contributor to various conversations, appearing on various local news programs and in publications like Variety and Rolling Stone magazine. When he's not writing about himself in the third person, not teaching class, not coaching or advocating for his esports team, and not sleeping from all that work, Alexander is a huge fan of professional wrestling and attends local shows whenever he can. He can also be found consorting with his wife and his family of dogs: Boo-Boo, Cody, Wagnar, and Wiggles.
