Learning vocabulary is fun and rewarding. Of course, you are not studying vocabulary just for fun. You want to learn words and advance your level of English. This book is aware of your needs and values your time and effort. Therefore, it is designed to make vocabulary learning easy and less effortless as well as less time consuming. Vocabulary Practice is a workbook for ESL/EFL intermediate level students. This book focuses on the teaching of the most commonly used words in written English. The book contains twenty five lessons. Additional activities after every four lessons provide a review for the past four lessons. There are twenty five lessons and six additional activities. Repetition is essential to vocabulary learning. Brain cells form a new connection each time the word is repeated on the condition that the word is used in a new context. Each repetition will expand word knowledge and allow new connections with various domains of the brain. The number of meaningful repetitions relates to creation of new connections and the number of new connections relate to successful vocabulary learning. Words presented in each lesson are repeated over and over again in different sentences or phrases. Variety in the number of activities aims to achieve the creation of repetition effect. In other words, the purpose of excessive amount of repetition is to ensure that you are learning the words presented to you in each lesson. The book does not aim to challenge your vocabulary knowledge. The sole purpose of this book is to provide you a foundation in which you can build a strong vocabulary. Outline of a Lesson You will find a word list at the very beginning of each lesson. The entire lesson is built on the mastery of these words. Each lesson contains eleven activities. Variety of activities allows these words to appear multiple times and in different word forms. Activity one The first activity comes with three variations. The first variation You will see a long list of sentences. There are two sentences with similar meaning. Your task is to find all the pairs of sentences with similar meaning. The second variation to this activity This is a text based activity. Each text contains an irrelevant sentence. Read and find the irrelevant sentence. The third variation The text contains two missing sentences. Below the text you will see five sentences containing the missing sentences. Check all the sentences against the text and find the most appropriate sentences to put in the text. Activity two Match the beginning of the sentence to the ending. Activity three Put the following phrases in the correct place. Activity four Last words of each sentence are taken away. Put the words back into their correct place. Activity five Use the following collocations in sentences of your own.Activity sixChoose the correct word to make a collocation. Activity seven Put the following verbs in the correct place. Activity eight Choose the correct word or phrase to complete the sentence. Activity nine Use the following word in the correct form.Activity ten Use the words above to complete the sentences. Activity eleven Use the model sentence and complete the missing parts of the sentence with a word or a phrase of your own. . Since the model sentence contains alliteration, you need to find words that begin with the same sound to maintain the alliteration.
