OverviewThe idea that architecture can operate exclusively as a monument to embodiment, sheltering the human body and protecting everything human about it, appears to have been extinguished with the decline of the grand narrative of the classical tradition and the emergence of a multiplicity of technologically driven narratives in architecture. The post-structuralist bodies, conceived as social and cultural artifacts, are radically different from the ones found at the centre of the humanist tradition. The emerging bodies are partial, multiplicitous, indeterminate, and deliberately torn into organs, as opposed to the wholesome and clearly defined bodies initially proposed as subjects of architecture in ancient Greece. These bodies no longer aspire to participate in the creation of binary oppositions such as interior and exterior, public and private. Their form escapes the limits of geometric rules, symmetry, and balance. They have relinquished their affinity for unity and strive towards partiality. The list of ambiguous terms and categorizations of the partial and imaginary bodies that today we look to re-inscribe into the image of contemporary architecture goes on. However, the question remains, what do we really know about these bodies? What are their needs and desires? What mechanisms produce them? Are they real or imaginary? Or both? Can we reach them on social media? Is the physical body a prerequisite for their existence? What turns them on? What makes them anxious?
