Overview

The growing global competition compels organizations to bring products/ structures with advanced technology and features. Specifically, in structural elements, one can see different types of forces and interactions among them. The forces and their interactions are the main elements, which determine shape and size of those elements. Prof.R. Panneerselvam with his rich experience of teaching and research at Anna University main campus and Pondicherry University main campus for four decades, published 18 well established text books in PHI Learning, Cengage and Amazon. N. Rajalakshmi holds B.E.(Civil) and M, E. (Structural Engg.) and she served in two different engineering colleges. Presently, she is an independent consultant. The joint effort of these authors resulted with this text book on 'Engineering Mechanics: Dependent Systems and Truss', to serve as an elective for all branches of engineering students at undergraduate (B.E./ B.Tech./ B.S.) level as well as at post graduate (M.E./M.Tech, M.S.) structural engineering. The text begins with a chapter on dependent systems/ motions, which presents the principle of dependent motion with numerous illustrations. Chapter 2 gives a comprehensive presentation on truss, which presents topics, vis. assumptions of truss, advantages of truss, types of truss, forms of truss, conditions to check nature of truss, analysis of truss, zero force member, methods of analysis of truss such as method of joints to analyze truss and method of sections. The entire text is written in easy-to-read style with numerous illustrations augmenting theories of engineering mechanics. In each subject, learning objectives, summary, keywords, multiple choice questions, review questions and answers for multiple choice questions of all chapters. The authors sincerely thank Amazon for having enabled them to publish this text in its platform. The authors invite suggestions from academicians and readers of this text. R. Panneerselvam, B.E., M.E., Ph.D. N. Rajalakshmi, B.E., M.E.
