Reviews

South Asia's energy security dilemma is one of the signal challenges of the 21st century, critical to the economic future of almost two billion people and the political future of one of the world's most volatile regions. Charles Ebinger combines impressive analysis with insight and experience in demonstrating that the only way this fractious region can surmount its energy problems, and meet its security challenges, is through regional cooperation. That requires not only political will but also the energy realism found in these pages. --Daniel Yergin, author The Prize: The Epic Quest for Oil, Money, and Power and The Quest: Energy, Security, and the Remaking of the Modern World Coming from a distinguished scholar who has worked on this subject for three decades, this volume is gripping in its presentation and rich in insightful analysis. Most definitely a book that should be read around the world! --R. K. Pachauri, chairman, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change; director general of the Energy and Resource Institute Charles Ebinger has accumulated extraordinary knowledge and rare insight into South Asian energy issues over a period of thirty-six years. His treatise is essential reading for strengthening energy security for a third of humanity. It provides deep understanding for cooperation in finding energy solutions to spur growth of regional economies. --Gulfaraz Ahmed, former chairman, Oil and Gas Development Corporation (Pakistan) and National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Pakistan) No individual is better placed than Charles Ebinger to write this masterful overview. It addresses the different meanings of energy security and how these resonate in states that are highly diverse, short of leadership, and, in some cases, on the verge of failure. Offering clear policy recommendations, it is the definitive study of this key region's energy policies. --Stephen P. Cohen, Brookings Institution, coauthor of Arming without Aiming: India's Military Modernization
