Overview

While for most of us, the Tarot seems to us a simple card game, a pastime, for Papus it had a cosmological, philosophical, initiatory and divinatory character. For him, its origin went back to the Book of Thoth, an ancient sacred text of the Egyptians that centuries later the Bohemians, that is, the Gypsy Gypsies, introduced into Western Europe. If the history and the philosophical applications were explained by Papus in his work The Tarot of the Bohemians (1889), in this Divinatory Tarot (1909) he intends to offer a treatise on practical divination aimed at all interested readers, whatever their level.

Gérard Encausse (La Coruña, 1865-Paris, 1916), better known by his pseudonym Papus, was a scholar, doctor of medicine and surgery, but also an astrologer and advisor to Tsar Nicholas II. He is considered ""the Balzac of the occult,"" both for the quality and the extent of his work. He spent his youth in Paris, there he studied medicine and began to be interested in the occult, something that would accompany him throughout his life. As he himself confessed, while his companions dealt with political problems in Europe and read the authors of official science, he spent hours at the National Library.
