Overview

What do we know about Ebola? Authored by two professionals in the medical and science fields, Ebola: An Emerging Infectious Disease Case Study analyzes the recent outbreak of the virus from a variety of angles and provides context for our understanding of emerging infectious diseases, how they are treated, and how agencies and governments respond to them. This timely resource provides a firm foundation for academic discussions within microbiology, nursing, health science, and public health programs. Informative and unique, it presents Ebola as a case example that serves as the backbone for a wider discussion about infectious diseases. The history, biology, biotechnology, and epidemiology of the Ebola virus is presented, as well as the differing responses from international aid agencies, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) in identifying and containing the recent outbreak. By weaving in references to news stories that became part of our collective understanding of the outbreak, Ebola: An Emerging Infectious Disease Case Study will captivate interest and encourage readers to think broadly and critically about emerging infectious diseases in the modern age.

Author Information

George Ealy, MD, PhD, completed his undergraduate education at Davidson College (BS), continued at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte to earn a Master of Science, and received his Doctor of Philosophy in Microbiology and Immunology in 1980 from the University of Louisville. He continued his postgraduate education there, earning the Doctor of Medicine in 1987. A noted scholar of the composer Ludwig van Beethoven, Dr. Ealy published a seminal article in 1994 concerning the composer’s famous hearing loss, which definitively established from primary source materials that Beethoven was able to hear throughout his life by using early technology for sound amplification (ear trumpets and various resonating devices at the piano). The article, “Of Ear Trumpets and Resonance Plate: Early Hearing Aids and Beethoven’s Hearing Perception,” was published by 19th-Century Music (University of California Press) a renowned journal of musicology and has been cited hundreds of times in various books and research articles. Dr. Ealy has also written several articles concerning the medical history of composers including Beethoven and Mozart. Dr. Ealy is currently professor of microbiology at Keiser University (Jacksonville, FL) and instructs nursing and biomedical science students in clinical microbiology, for which he has received numerous excellence-in-teaching awards. In 2013, Dr. Ealy received the highest award given by the Commonwealth of Kentucky when he was commissioned by the governor as a member of the Order of Kentucky Colonels. He is also an active member of the Duval County Medical Society and the Florida Medical Association. Carolyn A. Dehlinger is a professor of biological sciences at Keiser University in Jacksonville, Florida. She received her Master of Applied Science in Technology Management from the University of Denver and her Master of Science in Biology from Mississippi State University. She completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Florida. She teaches students in the Biomedical Sciences and Biotechnology degree programs in addition to students enrolled in non-majors biology courses. At Keiser, Carolyn played an integral role in the development of the Biomedical Sciences degree curriculum and has served on multiple National Science Foundation grant projects aimed at delivering biotechnology education to both students and educators. Carolyn serves as a subject matter expert with the American Council on Education in Washington, DC. In this role, she evaluates curricula and determines their eligibility for accreditation. She is a proud member of the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels, an honor bestowed by the governor of Kentucky for community service.
