OverviewPart One: The Grandmother Councils It is 1960 and Nika has returned home looking forward to a long rest. After years of non-stop travel giving museum presentations about her Ojibwa culture, she thinks her service is done. Her Herb Mother has other ideas, insisting that Nika go to a Council meeting out East where the Clan Elders will discuss the world's problems. Nika is called upon by her Native American teachers to help save the Earth from being poisoned and pillaged. During the journey Nika becomes a witness and collaborator in the events that sparked the environmental movement. The time also celebrates the long awaited legal Freedom of Religion for Native People to practice their own traditions. This time the Elders are invited to Councils of Animals, Plants and Elemental Forces that are facing the Sixth Extinction.
