Overview

Sally portrays her subjects vividly and with careful attention to anatomical accuracy. As she says, there is one difference between painting animals and painting other subjects - such as landscapes, plants, still life, even human portraits - animals move. You never know when you are portraying an animal whether you have time for a detailed study, or will need to work fast to capture its likeness in a sketch. Her book is as varied as it is practical. She draws cats and dogs and other domestic animals with a skill that is born of her love of her subject. What is vital, she points out, is observation and accuracy. Even the apparently random patches of colour on a tortoiseshell cat, for example, obey certain rules. This wonderfully informative book is useful for all those wanting to paint their pets.

Reviews

Sept 06 Sally Michel starts off this book by saying that the most important factor in drawing animals is analyzing it, gathering as much information as you can in your head, before finally drawing it onto the paper. She does her best to help the reader in explaining how to do that exactly. In the materials chapter she teaches us about the many different pens, pencils and brushes available as well as the different papers to drawn on and all the extra equipment you might need. Throughout the next chapters she explains us how she draws certain animals, with what materials and in what positions. Step by step photographic instructions are included for drawing Justin the Cat, The Running Dogs and The Horse. To end the book she gives us advice on how to best draw a charmingly cute dog portrait. This book will not teach you how to draw just like that but it does teach you some basics, gives you explanations on all the materials and inspirational insight in drawing pets. I have admired her beautiful artwork throughout this book. Euro-Reviews Jan 06 This fascinating book has given me a wealth of information on which to base my sketches and portraits of my cocker spaniel dog. Never before would I have attempted such a task, but after reading Sally Michel's advice I gave this project a go and was pleased with my efforts. Sally explains clearly in this book the importance of anatomical accuracy and how just observing a cat or dog moving for a while will help you recall it as you draw. This book covers dogs, cats, small animals, horse, drawing animals in their natural environments and a few projects for you to follow so that you can practice the techniques. A must -have book if you are contemplating drawing your much loved pets! minigallery.co.uk
