Reviews

Paul Sungro Lee's book shows how to do mission well, drawing on theory, international teaching experience, and extensive personal field experience. Both gospel and culture are taken seriously in this text, and passion brings it to life. --Miriam Adeney, former president, American Society of Missiology, and associate professor of world Christian studies, Seattle Pacific University Here is a unique and relevant volume, bringing together elements of thoughtful memoir, missions theory, and practical training. . . . Readers will be grateful to find that the writing is accessible and the advice is eminently practical. --Stephen T. Pardue, associate professor of theology, Asia Graduate School of Theology, and co-editor of Majority World Theology Series This is a fascinating autobiographical story of migration and mission told by one who has lived in three continents. It is also full of wisdom about missionary discipleship, to which it brings a different global perspective from most comparable works. --Kirsteen Kim, Paul E. Pierson Chair in World Christianity and Associate Dean for the Center for Missiological Research, Fuller Theological Seminary This book is more than a perfunctory reading of theological abstractions on cross-cultural missions. Honest reflections on his own life and those whom God has called, and is calling, Dr. Lee to serve, this book paints a vivid picture of the power of the gospel to change lives, one person, one group at a time. This book will compel and prepare readers and missional leaders to seek and follow the Holy Spirit--into uncharted waters of redemption, restoration, and reconciliation. --Louis Wilson, Senior Pastor, New Song Community Church, Baltimore, Maryland This book will not only rekindle our love for God and God's people but will also challenge us to take Matthew 28:19 seriously as Dr. Lee does. --Danny C. S. Ro, Senior Pastor, Sarang Community Church of Southern California, Anaheim, California Disciples of the Nations presents scholarly research but remains accessibly practical. Further, it reads deeply personal, speaking to the heart and inspiring action. . . . It is a long-awaited resource for the global church. --Sadiri Joy Tira, Lausanne Movement Senior Associate and Catalyst for Diasporas, Canada Dr. Paul Lee, who we have known and highly esteemed for many years, writes what he has lived and we have seen the undeniable hand of God upon both his teaching and those who have learned from him. --Les Norman, Founder, DCI Global Partnerships, United Kingdom Dr. Lee offers solid missiological insight birthed out of both his academic understanding of world missions and, more importantly, years of practicing incarnational ministry in a variety of international contexts. His writing serves as a valuable resource for those training to serve internationally as well as those who are currently navigating the complexities of intercultural discipleship. --Chad Williams, Senior Pastor, Union Church of Manila, Philippines This book is brimming with rich biblical insights gleaned from years of scholarly research and fruitful missionary work in three continents. I highly recommend this for every serious follower of Christ who wants to be more effective in discipling men and women in different multicultural contexts. --Tom Roxas, President, International Graduate School of Leadership, Philippines Dr. Lee presents honest reports on discipleship in the cross-cultural context of both cases of success and failure. . . . Not just theological principles but much practical missionary experiences are felt to make his book a wonderful symphony. This book is an excellent guide for pastors and missionaries to evaluate their work and for ministry interns to discover their models. --Myung Ho Kim, former Director, Disciple Making Ministries International, South Korea This book is a rare combination of personal experiences and scholarly researches. . . . Just as Mordecai described Esther's selfless ministry that blessed the people of God, I'm confident that his elaborate book is a gift to our generation 'for such a time as this.' --Kangchoon Lee, General Secretary, Jesus Korea Sungkyul Church, South Korea Dr. Lee's book is more than just a theoretical table discussion. I trust that the Holy Spirit will enlighten you as you read through every page of his book with rich experiences and practical advice on cross-cultural discipleship. Amid the flood of writings about techniques of discipleship, his book uncompromisingly stresses the lifestyle of discipleship. --Youn Dong Chung, former President, Sungkyul Theological Seminary, South Korea I have long been interested in the origin of ideas and cross-cultural engagement. Dr. Lee invites the reader into both of these areas of my personal interest. Perhaps the central question in this book is how we as Christians can engage with those around us, while both respecting people whose beliefs and cultures differ from those of our own and at the same time, maintaining the centrality of the gospel message and confidence we have. . . . Dr. Lee really addresses a cross-cultural ministry. --Rollin A. Van Broekhoven, former US Federal Judge
