Overview

Returning back to school after Covid-19 closures may bring anxiety and uncertainty to students as they walk through the front doors. Their school-as they knew it in the spring- will look different and students need to know they are safe and cared for by everyone in the school. Inside this book is a plethora of opportunities to teach Social Emotional Learning (SEL) through children's own experiences and reactions to the questions. Each page ends with a rhyming statement to support ideas they come up with and reinforce new school procedures. Don't miss any details in the illustrations that may spark discussions around diversity and inclusion. Although children may see new and Different Faces, they will be welcomed with smiles, in all cases.

Author Information

"Kim Welling is a seasoned educator with 34 years of experience in early childhood education as a teacher and administrator. She has experience in trauma informed practices, restorative practice, Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), and Social Emotional Learning (SEL). She currently works as a Student Support Services Administrator serving at-risk students across the school district in beautiful Burlington, Washington. After 16 years as an assistant principal of an elementary school, she now supports students who are homeless (McKinney-Vento federal program), in foster care, chronically absent from school, and are truant or at risk of dropping out of school. Kim received her B.A. at Washington State University in Education and Early Childhood Development. She continued her education at Gonzaga University with a Master's degree in Administration, Curriculum, and Instruction. English artist, Sarah Lister, has had a love of painting and children's book illustration since the age of 11. Her first children's book A Little Bit Dirty, a Tiny Bit Worn was published in 2015 and she now works full time as a free-lance illustrator. Sarah attended Staffordshire University where she received a B.A. Honours degree in Fine Art and lives with her partner and children in the Shropshire Hills in England near the Welsh border. Her ""children's book style"" paintings are usually of families and pets and often set in a woodland scene or a seaside. Sarah's paintings are created from customers' photographs and evoke happy memories of favourite places, people and pets. She works from home in her art studio using traditional mediums of black ink, watercolour paint and col-oured artist pencils on watercolour paper. Sarah can be contacted for commissions through her website www.sarahlisterart.co.uk or her Facebook page or Instagram @Sarah Lister illustration."
