OverviewDespite the GDR's constant interest in political and above all economic relations with Argentina, these were difficult at first. In addition to the lack of diplomatic relations until 1973, this was due to Argentina's economic and political instability. Contacts were initially established between foreign trade companies and institutions and a discreetly operating GDR trade mission in Buenos Aires, until it was closed in 1962. Relations only stabilized during the Argentine military dictatorship from 1976-1983. Due to Argentina's political and economic isolation from the West, the importance of the Eastern Bloc as a trading partner increased. In the Falklands War, GDR diplomacy sided with Argentina and relations benefited from this even after the change of government and Argentina's return to democracy in 1983. The cooperation now extended to foreign and geopolitical areas. The projects for economic and political cooperation only ended abruptly with the fall of the Berlin Wall.
