OverviewThe 'Dictionary of Meteorology and Climatology' wants to address above all target groups, which are on the one hand concerned with the topic weather and climate or may come across it, and which are on the other hand active on an international level and may therefore come into contact with foreign languages. The student who wants to do a semester abroad as well as the scientist who communicates with colleagues abroad in writing or orally or even wants to take up a position abroad gets rapidly the hang of the specialized vocabulary he needs with this dictionary. Furthermore many internationally active professional groups find here the necessary vocabulary to communicate in German about weather and climate. Examples are aviation, navigation, the military, the field of renewable energy, the tourist industry and construction companies. Also for people participating in outdoor sports it can be useful or even vital to understand the regional weather forecast when they stay abroad. During the compilation of this dictionary a certain importance was attached to including, beside the core vocabulary of meteorology and climatology, to some extent also terms coming from related fields of science (for example physical geography, glaciology, oceanography), basic sciences (physics, chemistry, thermodynamics, statistics and others) and fields of practical application (for example aviation). This is the case above all, when the terms are found frequently in relevant specialized literature and / or are indispensable for an elevated specialist communication on weather and climate. While in the well-known publishing houses for foreign languages reference dictionaries and learning vocabularies are planned and published in different product lines, this dictionary is, with regard to structure and extent, appropriate for both possible uses - 3370 entries in the part German - English - 4560 entries in the part English - German - Quick finding through multiple listing of terms and phrases consisting of several parts under different generic terms. - Under each basic entry listing of all terms with the same meaning (synonyms). - References to differences in British and American English. - Lists of English and German abbreviations used in technical jargon. - Verb conjugation tables of German verbs relevant to the subject.
