Overview

'There is nothing mysterious about voice work. We all breathe and use our voices daily and mostly do so without thinking about it. If we want to become skilled voice users, we need to start by learning how the voice works - and how we can work in tandem with that function.' Developing Your Voice bridges the gap between voice science and practical voice use where detailed and tangible exercises receive thoughtful scientific explanations. Developing Your Voice allows you, from any starting point, to systematically work with your own voice. The exercises have their basis in the foundation for all voice use - body awareness and breathing. This training will help you access a free, smooth and sustainable voice with the flexibility to express yourself, be it in your personal or professional life. Developing Your Voice concludes with a chapter showing how the vocal technique meets practical uses in text and acting. Harald Emgard started as an actor and later took an interest in teaching. He is a registered speech-language pathologist with a wealth of experience of teaching actors, musical actors and opera singers. Harald has held the position of Senior Lecturer in voice and speech at some of the most prestigious theatre academies in Sweden. You can see his former students on stage and screen in Sweden, Berlin, London's West End and Hollywood.

DEVELOPING YOUR VOICE is a fantastic book for any performing artist interested in learning more about the physiology of their instrument and how to apply that knowledge to their craft. Harald's writing reflects the kind of clarity that is born out of extensive teaching experience. As a result, he brings complex technical concepts into sharp focus with ease. The book is thoughtfully outlined and the artful illustrations and exercises help the reader embody the practices discussed in each section. Beyond providing solid technical information, Harald excels at explaining how this knowledge then informs the artist's ability to express themselves. I will regularly use this book as a resource in my own studio. David Sisco, Adjunct Voice Faculty at NYU Steinhardt; DEVELOPING YOUR VOICE is an invaluable book not only for actors and singers but also for Speech-Language Pathologist students, and for every SLP working in a voice clinic. With the close connection between voice science and practical voice work and with its pedagogical structure, the book is a true treasure chest for all professionals working with voice. Harald Emgard's emphasis is that there nothing mysterious with voice work: it is all about knowledge regarding voice production. His scientifically based guidelines and structured exercises can be adapted to individual conditions. In a holistic way, Harald guides you to this work with a personal touch based on his deep knowledge and long experience. The book is methodically structured, regimented step-by-step and easy to read and apply. Furthermore, the distinct illustrations facilitate the comprehension of the text. DEVELOPING YOUR VOICE fills a void. It is a book that I have lacked during my professional career as a speech and language pathologist with more than forty years of experience in working with different kind of voice problems and nearly as many years as lecturer to SLP students. I highly recommend this fantastic book! Its qualities make me indeed happy. Cia Lundstroem, Reg. Speech-Language Pathologist, Helsingborg Hospital, Senior Lecturer, Lund University
