OverviewThis text makes a contribution to the on-going debate on Ireland's participation in a European peace-keeping force, the Nice Treaty, and wider issues concerning democracy and the price of peace. John Maguire makes use of a range of current and historical sources, to show how democratic processes have to be protected in the face of US policy. He argues that Ireland has to make mature and independent decisions based on the rights of its citizens to take a critical look at the price of defending peace.
