OverviewHow has the testing era affected education? I say it has spawned an environment leading to murder, harassment, scandal and specifically this: The following haunting and disturbing tale is the result of one of my last interactions with a former education peer. It's the tale of his teacher friend, young, naive Katie and how her life came to a tragic end. Immediately across the small bathroom, his eyes were drawn to the ghastly outline of a bag coated inside with dribbles and smears of a lumpy, murky fluid, and something larger within he inferred was a human head. The bag and its grisly, semi-gelatinous contents barely protruded over the back of the tub edge. From the once noble field of education, I bring you the reality of what actually occurred due to the highly pressurized and volatile education atmosphere created during the testing era. Extreme case - yes; rare case - yes; inevitable - yes; but Katie was a young, vibrant, caring, idealistic woman in her prime. Katie had parents from Iowa that can no longer talk to their daughter about her experiences teaching in the big city. Katie, who loved her students, her family, and her peers no longer saw a reason to live because of her job! How bad can a job be for someone to purposely end up dead and decaying, undiscovered for three weeks in an apartment bathtub? I can confirm how horrible it was at that school for Katie and most everyone else; and it wasn't the students, the conditions, the parents, or the staff - with one exception. Principal Betty was a professional sociopath, devoid of empathy, sympathy, or even humanity for anyone she considered a career hindrance. Betty got away with being cruel, callous, demeaning, vicious, incompetent and completely amoral because she got high test scores. I was there - I know. This book is about my experiences working for Betty and her ruthlessly harsh environment which not only lead to death, but perpetual misery and psychological torment for many I knew. My role was being her math curriculum coordinator but in reality, I felt like a minion to Hitler. Lest you think I'm being overly dramatic; I tried to warn anyone who would listen regarding her for years; by book, letter and internet; but no one listened because nobody had died - that is until now.
