With Naked Trees, Terpstra captures something he couldn't find in the pages of books like The Native Trees of Canada--a 1917 reference guide that influenced his work. He wanted to move beyond the scientific and get at something deeper. How does it feel to stand beneath boughs? What's it like to look up at stretching branches? What do trees do in an urban environment like downtown Hamilton? - Hamilton Spectator on Naked Trees He tells of towering white oaks along the QEW and the black walnut trees of Hamilton, discusses the beauty and functionality of utility poles, and the joy of creating a work of art from black cherry wood. - Globe and Mail on Naked Trees

Author Information

John Terpstra is the author of ten books of poetry and four books of non-fiction. He is interested in how natural geography and built geography integrate and relate to each other and in how history is simultaneous with now. Daylighting Chedoke is a companion book to his two earlier books about Hamilton as a living, breathing geographical location, Falling into Place and The House with the Parapet Wall.
