OverviewWhat a tragic figure the mother is in this story! Like many children raised in less than ideal circumstances, the author is level headed about the pain caused by both her father's failure to commit fully to his family and her mother's inability to escape her circumstance. This is a truly believable story set in the post WWII poverty of rural America. My childhood was filled with similar dysfunctional families. The problems associated with poverty, lack of education and a domineering Church that is heavy on condemnation and not so much into forgiveness can drive many to try to escape though alcohol and drugs. I hope the next segment of this memoir is just as fascinating.
