Overview

Despite the significant presence of Cuban immigrants in the US, current research on Cuban Spanish linguistics remains underexplored, most crucially its ramifications to areas such as language contact and change. New analyses are desperately called for given the increasing interest in this area of research. The present volume covers these existing lacunae on Cuban Spanish dialectology by providing a state-of-the-art collection of articles from different theoretical perspectives and linguistic areas, including phonological and phonetic variation, morphosyntactic approaches, sociolinguistic perspectives, and the acquisition of Cuban Spanish as a heritage language. The book is highly valuable to students and scholars interested in Hispanic linguistics and Cuban Spanish dialectology.

Exceptionally well designed by Alejandro Cuza, this volume brings together contributions from distinguished scholars of Spanish linguistics and Cuban Spanish in particular. The volume is the first of its kind to present novel analyses of a range of aspects of Cuban Spanish from diverse and up-to-date theoretical perspectives. It is a significant contribution, which reflects the vitality and intellectual energy of the field. Without a doubt, the collection will be of great interest to students and scholars of Spanish linguistics. -- Carmen Silva-Corvalan, Professor Emerita, University of Southern California In this timely collection, Cuza brings together scholars who deliver up formal theoretical analyses, pragmatic nuance, clever methodologies, and a smorgasbord of novel data placing 21st-century Cuban Spanish, broadly defined, at the cutting edge of linguistic research. -- Terrell Morgan, professor of Hispanic linguistics, Ohio State University In this clear and well-organized treatise, students interested in Cuban Spanish in the United States will find a wealth of information yielded by rigorous research in the areas of phonetics, phonology, morphosyntax, lexicology, and acquisition. -- Jorge Guitart, professor of Spanish linguistics, University at Buffalo: The State University of New York
