OverviewPreviously published as Lost Boys, this quartet of over-layering stories introduces four strangers. The only thing they have in common is their dull English town and the unusual heatwave that broils its lack-lustre streets and wilting parks. They and their separate stories are drawn violently together when a young boy pulls them into the maelstrom of his fate. Each is at a crossing place. Matt must leap the gulf between adolescence and adulthood. Megan needs to find her way out of troubled waters. A family crisis propels Jade to set her foot on a tenuous path to faith. Mrs Fairlie knows the bridge she faces but refuses to cross without knowing the fate of her son. A pivotal events connects their narratives and their lives to demonstrate how fates intertwine and how the consequences of our choices can affect people we don't even know. Table of ContentsReviewsA number of years ago, a new trend in writing rose from some cursed tar pit filled with flawlessly cleansed ancient skeletons. So writers tore all the meat off the bones of their novels leaving readers to do most of the work. One can picture hungry readers stranded in some distorted Dali desert, starving, scratching through the sand like palaeontologists searching for sustenance from scraps of information left on bleached bones. Serious readers are thankful that writers like Cresswell have resisted this trend and strive to nourish them with linguistic banquets of colour, texture and imagery. This book is a treasure. The prose is raw and warty, reminding me of Elizabeth Strout's Olive Kitteridge. This book will undoubtedly have you falling in love with language all over again; will inspire you with just what can be done by the skilful lacing together of words on a page. Cresswell is a remarkable storyteller, and a talented wordsmith. This book is a triumph for the Indi movement, and an example of all that is good about it.
